    Located

    There are two species of African Elephant, the African Forest Elephant and
    the African Savanna Elephant.  The African Savanna Elephant is found in
    central, eastern and southern Africa.

    Diet

    The African Elephant will eat many different types of plants, leaves, fruit and
    other vegetation.


    Habitat

    The habitat of the African Savanna Elephant is the grasslands, savannas and
    wooded areas of eastern, southern and central Africa.  

    Size

    Average weight of an African Elephant:
    12,000 - 14,000 lbs.
    Average height of an African Elephant:
    9 - 11 ft.

    Reproduction

    The gestation or pregnancy period for a female African Elephant is about 22
    months; almost 2 years.  It will give birth to a single calf.

  • Like many animals that live on the savanna, poaching and habitat loss are the largest threats to the African Elephant.
  • The African Elephant is a very intelligent and unique animal, with many complex behaviors and social patterns.
  • The African Elephant is distinguishable by its large ears that are shaped like Africa.
  • The African Elephant is larger than the Asian Elephant, and is the largest (heaviest) land mammal on Earth.
